CIPCUG SIG meeting on News, Rumors and "What's Next" September 8, 2003

Finding Information on the Internet
Particularly News, Rumors, and "What's Next"

In this fast-paced world, there is a deluge of information which might be of interest to you.

Late breaking tip - click here

Have you ever heard a snippet of news on the radio and wanted more details?

First of all - boil down the key words that interest you. For instance, do you have friends or relatives in British Columbia, Canada?
You may want to know about the latest on the wildfires.

For this example, we just went to GOOGLE and clicked on the NEWS tab and entered the words fire and the words British Columbia with quotes

We chose the quotes because with the current political situation in the Middle East, British soldiers are always coming under fire.

One advantage of this type of search is that it gives you the time this report was released (how recent is the news item) and it also might give you access to news organizations you may never have heard of that might be closer to the events. (Like all the Canadian reports) Locals may give more details than CNN or one of the other World Wide news organizations.

GENERAL NEWS

However, if you want to bookmark a National (or International source) you trust and like, then you can do that too:

ABC news
Christian Science Monitor
Washington Post
NBC news (MSNBC)
CNN

These are among the MANY you can find links to instantly through Google as well, just by clicking on the NEWS tab and under each top story are links to the various news agencies.

WARNING - Prepare for lots of pop-ups and "pop unders" with these sites.
(Another reason to use Mozilla Firefox which stops all pop-ups)

RUMORS

Have you ever wondered if something was a rumor or really true?
Bill Gates giving away $1000 if you forward this email to 100 friends???

Our very own CIPCUG home page has GREAT links to check out rumors like this.

http://www.snopes.com is also great site for debunking the latest hoaxes

THE LATEST

To find the latest "what's coming next" in the field of computers, or any other field, you can look here: www.cnet.com
techweb.com

or even back to good old Google - News and Tech News

THE LATEST TIP

If you are serious about being a newshound, you MUST get Firefox 1.0 or greater.
This comes with a built in link to the BBC news organization and with a button right on your toolbar that says "Latest Headlines". When you click it, a menu drops down with the latest headlines. Click on any one and you go right to a webpage with that story.

VERY COOL
