Breaking News

Our old mail server was no longer compliant with the current anti-spam requirements of some Internet sites, like Yahoo, Mindspring and others. We were being blocked. So we had to install a new server quite quickly. And, glory be, it is up and running. If you had bookmarks pointing to the mail server for webmail, you may need to change them. The old server used a different port from the current one. However, we have made it easy on you. All you have to type into your browser to get to webmail is vcmail.net (capitalization is unimportant). If you need help setting up Outlook Express, Outlook or other mail client, visit our email setup page. The new server has some interesting and more accessible spam controls in it as well. So, do log into the webmail where you can change passwords, read mail (handy if you are using someone else's computer), play with spam settings and generally make a mess of things (only kidding). If you are wondering what to do with the tags we are sticking into the subject lines, take a look at our spam filter page.

If you want to sign up for our CIPCUG ONLINE SERVICE, just call one of the above mentioned Techies in your area or someone you know and they will walk you through the set-up procedures. If you are a little timid about trying to set it up, they will come to your home to assist you.

The ISP Service fee is $15 per month plus a $15 registration fee. All ISP checks to be made payable to CIPCUG and mailed to Treasurer, CIPCUG, P. O. Box 51354, Oxnard CA 93031.

The settings for E-mail are:
Under the General Tab of Internet Account Properties, be sure to check-mark the box by the statement at the bottom "Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing".

POP3 = mail.vcmail.net
Return Mail SMTP = mail.vcmail.net
Be sure to use periods and not commas between each word.
Incoming Mail Server:
Account Name  username@cipcug.org (be sure to use the complete address.)
Password - Put your password here.
Log on using secure password authentication. (leave this box unchecked)
Outgoing mail server
Check mark: My server requires authentication

Web Mail
Connections are available when you are out of your dialing area. Just type in vcmail.net at the URL site and on the user name. Be sure to type in the complete name: liz@cipcug.org and your password, and you are there.

Usenet Groups
Users who want to subscribe to Usenet groups can enter news.iswest.com into Outlook Express, Free Agent or whatever they are using for Usenet.

Web Page Settings
For those of you who have/want web pages, web sites are not automatically created, so you must ask us to create the space. Once created you bring up your FTP client and indicate HOST NAME: cipcug.org (no username after) with your regular username and password. You will be dropped automatically into your private directory. People who want to visit your site will enter www.cipcug.org/your-username in their browsers to see your work.

If you are having trouble reaching CIPCUG.ORG (or any other site), you can improve reliability by editing your Hosts file in your main Windows directory. Most systems have a Hosts (no extension) file, but if they don't you can easily create one with Notepad or similar. All you need in one is the IP address of the site followed by the URL. All you need in your Hosts file is the two lines below:

207.178.213.229 cipcug.org
207.178.213.229 CIPCUG.ORG

Make sure the file is saved into C:\Windows (or wherever your Windows is installed) with no other text and it will speed up your access of CIPCUG as well as get around Internet tables that are still pointing to the wrong site.
